Back to school time can be one of the most expensive times for parents other than Christmas.
With school supplies, new clothes, school activities, after school activities, daycare and much more. Most families are coming back from holidays and unless you budgeted, money can be tight during back to school time.
I have compiled 10 easy money saving tips to help you save money and stress less during back to school time.

1. Shop with a list or lists.
Before you head out to do your back to school shopping grab each child’s supply list. Check and see what you already have from the previous year that can still be used. Make a list of the required items and stick to it.
2. Set a budget.
3. Learn to say no.
Along with back to school shopping comes the “I wants”. I want that book or that dress or that pencil case. If you intend to come in on budget or under you need to learn to say no and explain why. Kids will understand if you explain they can’t have the (blank) because we are saving for (blank). Saying no can be a powerful budgeting tool.
4. Use coupons and shop sales.
During back to school season most stores will run supplies and clothing sales and host lots of online coupons. Use them to your advantage. Compare your store flyers and print off all the available coupons. Shop smart and save.
5. Shop the dollar store.
Believe it or not the dollar store is a great source for school supplies. They carry pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons, craft supplies, rulers, calculators and much more for a fraction of the cost of your big box stores.
6. Shop your local thrift store.
Back to school clothing can get expensive save some money by shopping your local thrift store. Kids grow quick and most children’s clothing is in good condition at the thrift store. Thrift store clothing is generally a fraction of what you would find at the mall.
7. Stick to the basics.
When buying back to school supplies, clothing and lunches stick to the basics and save.
8. Join a buying club.
Some schools or organizations offer large discounts on school supplies because they buy in bulk. Check with your school see if they are offering school supply packs at a fraction of what you can buy in stores.
9. Shop early.
If you can start shopping for your school supplies early. Spreading out the purchases will make it easier on your budget and you won’t be left looking for that specific notebook two days before school starts.
10. Shop online.
Online shopping is great, I have found I can save anywhere from 10% to 20% on different items when I shop online and have the items delivered or picked up. The key to saving online is knowing what you need, knowing the retail price and having time to wait. Shop smart and save.
