Secret Garden Must Haves

The best gardening accessories can make your life so much easier. This year we moved from the city to the country with the intention of growing our own food and sourcing other locally grown produce.  We intend on harvesting, canning and freezing what we can to save money and feed our family all year round.

Gardening

The adventure has been amazingly rewarding. Did you know you can freeze over 75 different food items?  I never thought I would enjoy gardening so much but I find it truly relaxing.  Yes, it’s hard work taking a rocky hillside and unmaintained yard and turning it into a beautiful garden and household food source.  But it can be done.

Garden Bugs

We even added feeders for the hummingbirds and a bug house to help pollinate the flowers and produce. Remember when planting your garden to plant flowers that will attract butterflies and bees to help pollinate your garden.  This will increase your produce harvest and keep your garden happy.  You need the bees, birds and insects.

One Of The Best Kept Gardening Secrets Is…

How easy it is to compost. Compost is the cheapest source of fertilizer your garden needs. And it’s super cheap in the form of your food scraps.  Most cities have a municipal compost recycling program you can add your food scraps to on garbage day. If you have the space start your own compost bin!

How To Compost

Composting is super easy to do.  And it is the best way to reuse your food waste to help grow your own food. Now just a note for at home composting stick to garden waste and produce based food scraps.  Bones and meat based food waste may attract rodents and have a smell.
