Summer is great minus one thing.
The heat! I love the sunshine and all the fresh produce and the longer days. I even enjoy the kids being out of school and all the vacation stuff.
But I can do with out all the hot, hot Summer days that make you think twice about leaving the air conditioned house.
So how do you stay cool during the Summer without breaking the bank?
If you are watching your pennies and committed to keeping your budget in check you won’t be cranking the air conditioning all season. Standing in line for all the latest and greatest blended coffee creations may also be out. So what can you do to stay cool and still have a great summer?
How to beat the Summer heat:
1. Invest in a good air conditioning unit and keep the temperature moderate.
You can purchase air conditioners that turn off or switch to fan once the desired temperature is reached. Also ensure you are buying the correct sized unit for the space you want to cool.
2. Keep yourself hydrated.
Believe it or not you will feel the heat more if you are dehydrated. So keep the fluids chilled and coming. Having stainless steel water bottles on hand to help keep all your drinks ice cold is a must.
3. Make homemade popsicles.
Homemade popsicles are always a nice treat during the summer heat and they aren’t that complicated to make. Purchase a popsicle mold and fill with your favorite fruit puree or juice and freeze. A great recipe is mixing coconut water with fruit puree and a bit of honey. The coconut water will help hydrate you.
4. Choose loose airy cotton.
Cotton is a breathable fabric and will help keep you cool. This also works with your bed sheets too. Skip the polyester and use cotton sheets. You can even place your sheets or pillows in the freezer just before bed to add some chill to your slumber.
5. Add a fan.
Air circulation will help cool down a room. Place a fan in an open area to help create a cooling breeze.
6. Hit the lake.
Pack the family up and hit the lake for a cool refreshing swim, walk in the water or boat trip. Just remember your sunscreen. Some great memories happen at the lake.
7. Take a dip in the pool.
This is one of the best ways to cool off during the Summer according to my son. He will spend hours in our pool. We have our pool set up under a canopy tent so we don’t have to worry about too much sun and heat exposure. Great Summer fun, a way to beat the heat and great exercise all in one.
8. Iced water bottle.
During the winter we place hot water bottles in bed to warm up our toes. Why not place frozen ice packs in the bed to cool things down?
9. DIY your own air conditioner.
I love this frugal idea. Fill a roasting pan or bucket with ice and place in front of a fan. The cool air will circulate when the fan blows, cooling off the room.

10. Celebrate and strip it down.
Forget layers, jackets and leggings. Strip it down to your tank tops, bathing suits and shorts. Loose fitting cotton clothing is the best way to beat the heat while you are out and about. When you are at home switch it up to your most comfy pajamas and shorts.
11. Swing from the trees.
Go hang a hammock in the tree and relax and cool off while swinging in the trees.
12. Light up the grill.
Keep the heat outside. Light up the grill and throw a barbecue.
13. The oven is off limits.
Do not add any extra heat to the house. Opt to cook outside or use your slow cooker or Instant Pot to prepare meals.
14. Turn it off & unplug it.
Did you know your gas fireplace still puts off heat with just the pilot light? Turn off the fireplace (SAFELY). Turn down the lights and unplug all the appliances you don’t need. The added energy use will heat your home.
15. Sleep alone.
Hog the bed and the sheets. Keep your body heat to yourself. During the Winter we want to cuddle to keep warm, during the summer we just want to be cool.
16. Keep an eye on your pets.
Your pets need to be kept cool during the summer too. DO NOT leave them in the car! Ensure they are kept some where cool and with lots of drinking water. If your pet will allow dip their paws in cool water to help lower the heat level.
17. Go for minimal.
Less is more. Sleep with as few blankets as possible. Enjoy the less is more simplicity.
18. Wash you in cold water.
Frugally you save money when you wash things in cold water. When it comes to the human body you can keep cool by washing in cooler water. Or simply by dipping our feet and hands in cold running water.
19. Go camping.
Some how and for some reason camping is a cooling activity. I think because you are more relaxed, wearing less clothes and not really paying attention to your makeup. Plus usually you are in and out of the lake or going for a bike ride. Get out and go camping.
20. Go for a ride.
Get out and enjoy nature. Let the breeze fill your hair and take a bike ride.
21. Hit the patio and party with friends.
Fill up the cooler with ice. Enjoy some frosty drink. Grill up some burgers and take a dip in the pool. Who says you have to beat the heat solo.
