How To Get Rid Of Mice

With the onset of cooler weather mice are starting to move into our homes, crawl spaces, sheds and wood piles. They may be hiding in the attic, in the corners, under the stairs or behind your cupboards.  Believe me they are there whether you want them to be or not. Learn how to get rid of mice naturally and frugally.

Mice Season

Mice are present both inside and outside our homes all year round but during the fall months they tend to move indoors where it’s warmer. It is also nesting season. So don’t be surprised if you see more creatures during September to December depending on where you live.

How To Get Rid Of Mice

You can rid your home of mice in numerous ways, some more frugal than the other.   Mice like to sneak in to tiny holes in your walls or door ways or around venting or piping.  Sealing up these areas with caulking or weatherproofing is a mouse deterrent idea and it’s great weatherproofing for the cooler months.

Will Mice Go Away On Their Own

No, once a mouse has found a place he wants to call home they tend to settle in for the long hall. You will want to trap, repel or remove them yourself. Or call a pest control company to do the job for you.

Store Bought Rodent Repellent

Store bought rodent repellents work great as well but contain numerous chemicals harmful to people and pets so please use as directed. You can find some brand rodent repellents here as well as ultrasonic pest controls which works great to deter mice, spiders, mosquitoes and more.

Household Products That Deter Mice

Several common household products can be used to deter and repel spiders. Such as peppermint essential oil, ammonia, vinegar, hot peppers and clove oil.

Natural Way Of Getting Rid Of Mice

There are numerous natural ways to get rid of mice including many homemade and do it yourself rodent repellent sprays.

What Is The Fastest Way To Get Rid Of Mice

The fastest way to get rid of mice is traps, sticky traps and glue traps. Or to call a local pest control company and let them do the work for you.

Does Bleach Help Keep Mice Away

Bleach has a high odor that mice do not like and will deter them. A bleach solution will kill off bacteria and food residue that attract mice. Mix equal parts bleach and water in a spray bottle and spray on the area and wipe up liquid.  The strong odor of the bleach will deter mice from entering the spray zone area making this bleach solution a great mouse deterrent. Please remember that bleach is caustic and can cause materials to change color, use accordingly.

Mice Hate Peppermint

If you are looking for a rodent repellent plant to grow around your home to help deter pests peppermint is a great one.  Pests hate peppermint.

A common solution of water and peppermint essential oil can be used as a pest deterrent. The suggested solution is 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to 2 cups of water. Place this solution in a spray bottle and spray on the perimeter and entry points to your home.  Plus it will make your home smell amazing.

Pet Safe Rodent Repellent Spray

Too much of anything isn’t good.  In small amounts peppermint and vinegar are okay and safe for animals.  In high doses they can cause stomach upset and other side effects.  When making homemade pest repellents keep the spray area clear of pets till the solution is dry or cleaned up.

DIY Natural Rodent Repellent

As noted above peppermint or vinegar mixed alone with water work great as a rodent repellent solution.  A common homemade repellent can also be formulated from peppermint essential oils, vinegar and water.

How To Make Homemade Mouse Repellent Spray

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 15 drops of peppermint essential oil

Place all of the listed ingredients in a spray bottle.  Shake to ensure mixing of the ingredients.  Store in a room temperature location.  Keep out of reach of children and pets.

This homemade mouse repellant solution can be used as an indoor or outdoor mice repellent spray.  It can also be used as bug repellant.

This solution contains natural products and may need to be reapplied to the area to ensure continual rodent repellent. The above homemade repellent can be used as well during the summer months to deter mosquitoes for your patio or sundeck area.  Checkout these other great mosquito repellents sure to help keep your home and patio bug free.

How To Get Rid Of Rodents

If the above frugal and natural solutions don’t work. You can set traps or call a pest control company to do the work for you.

Remember you want to remove the food source. Block all points of entry and protect your family, animals and home.
