If you want to eat you have to go shopping. Whether you love it or hate it you gotta do it. An average family of four can spend over $800 a month on groceries.
Putting groceries right up there with your top household bills. So how do you save your hard earned money and still provide healthy meals for your family?
You could clip coupons, watch the store sales and stack away the savings or you could store the scissors and start saving the smart way. Learn how to save money on your groceries without clipping coupons.
7 Ways To Save Money On Groceries Without Coupons:
1. Shop the store sales and stockpile.
Store sales can be a great way to save money. But…. Only if the items on sale are ones you are going to use. Don’t go buy a whole bunch of something just because it is on sale.
Stock up on items you regularly use. Or opt to try the brand on sale instead of your regular brand.
2. Use a meal plan.
I love meal plans and they are a great way to save money. If you have never meal planned before it is the simple act of planning meals generally dinner.
The best way to start is to take note of what you have at home and the meals you can create. Write these meal ideas down on your calendar and cook accordingly.
Some people plan monthly others weekly. You can learn more about meal planning here.
3. Go meatless.
Let’s face it meat is expensive, so are some meat alternatives. The idea of going meatless means you are rethinking dinner. Opt for beans and rice or what about a quiche or vegan stir fry.
Going meatless two or three times a week can save you a large portion of your grocery expense.
More examples of meatless meals would be pesto pasta with a side salad, vegetable minestrone soup with crusty bread or vegetarian pizza.
4. Shop local & in season.
Shopping local and in season is a great way to save money. Farmers markets are a great way to save money during the spring and summer. Stockpiling and preserving the bounty of the season.
Don’t expect to pay the same price for strawberries in the middle of winter as you would in the summer.
5. Opt for the cheaper brand.
One of the best ways to save money at the grocery store is to not be brand specific. Be open to trying something new. You may like the name brand (fill in the blank) but the generic version may taste the same and it is two dollars cheaper.
6. Leave the kids at home (even the big ones).
This is so true leave the kids at home even the big ones (the spouse).
Have you ever been shopping and you get to the register and there is a whole bunch of items being wrung up that are not on your list? This is how junk food makes its way into my house.
Money saving advice – leave the kids at home or order online.
7. Don’t shop while you are hungry.
Shopping while you are hungry is the worst, everything looks good and you want it now. Which means extra items make their way into your buggy.
Skip the grocery store while you are hungry or grab a snack before you go.
