There is something amazing about strawberry season. It’s that natural farmer’s market cue for summer is here. We just got our first email from the local market announcing that the beautiful red juicy berries will be arriving in the next few days. And we can’t wait! What are your favorite strawberry recipes?
I grew up picking fresh berries at the local farmer’s field followed by homemade strawberry shortcake on the patio. But you can do so much more with strawberries. Below you will find some amazing recipes from shortcake, to jam, strawberry BBQ sauce to strawberry lemonade. But before we get there let’s talk about storing your amazing harvest.
Let’s face it buying strawberries at the beginning of summer is cheaper than buying fresh berries in the middle of winter. To save yourself some money proper storage of your berries is key to strawberry enjoyment all year round.
The easiest and fastest storage option is freezing the berries. Learn all the other items you can freeze to save you tons of money.
How to freeze strawberries
You can store strawberries a few different ways. As freezer jam or in your favorite baking recipe. Or simply as the amazing berry they are.
Once you wash and hull the strawberries (which is removing the green stem). This tool is perfect for the job. You can toss all your berries into a freezer bag and freeze them. Or you could slice them and then place them in freezer bags or containers.
If you are wanting individually frozen berries so you can remove only a few berries at a time from the freezer for smoothies, salads or desserts you will need to follow the next few steps. Wash the berries gently, remove the stems and place the whole berries on a cookie sheet. Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for a few hours. Once the berries are firm and frozen transfer them into a freezer bag and place them in the freezer till you require them for recipes or eating.
