Secret Must Haves Of A Zero Waste Home

Zero Waste Home
A zero waste home is a home where sustainable living takes place.
It’s not about eliminating everything. It’s about embracing reusable, locally sourced, valued items that replace the function and use of disposable stuff.
Zero Waste Living
Our family has been embracing zero waste or lower waste living for a while now. After realizing how much waste we were making with just packaging we made some easy sustainable living changes. Like reusable grocery bags, shopping our local zero waste grocer, increasing our jar storage use and eliminating plastics.
Sustainable Lifestyle
Living a sustainable lifestyle goes beyond decreasing your waste. It’s about being more aware. Decreasing your plastic use, buying reusables. Growing your own food. Using up all you can and composting or recycling the rest.
Why Go Zero Waste
People choose to go zero waste or low waste for a lot of different reasons. Personally we were noticing just how much garbage our family was making with single use items. And we were reading up on the chemicals in plastic containers and packaging. The logical solution was to start start incorporating zero waste swaps into our daily lives and make more conscious decisions about what we use.
Zero Waste Swaps
As more and more people start living more sustainably more zero waste products are making their way into main stream use. When we started living more low waste the best way to swap out paper towels was with cloth napkins, rags, kitchen tea towels and so on. Now you can get reusable bamboo paper towels and unpaper towels. All washable and reusable which is great.
I think my favorite zero waste swaps are mason jars and tiffin containers for food storage. Beeswax wrap and linen bread bags or shopping bags are very popular. Stainless steel coffee mugs have become so mainstream that opting out of the paper cup at the coffee shop is normal.
Can Going Zero Waste Save You Money?
Yes, because you are reusing items long term. Therefore decreasing what you are buying on a continual basis and in turn saving money.
For example think about all the money you spend on paper napkins and paper towels. After swapping to cloth napkins and tea towels or un-paper towels you won’t be buying paper cloth products again, therefore saving money.
Zero Waste Swaps For Beginners
If you are brand new to zero waste living I think the best zero waste swaps for beginners are cloth shopping bags, cloth napkins, bamboo toothbrushes and solid shampoo.
